Biarritz & San Sebastian: perfect for the long weekend
My first proposition for this year’s long May weekend is the borderline of Aquitaine and the Basque Country ❤️ It’s a great idea to visit both on one trip – they are not far, and it would be a pity not to take advantage of the many attractions that this region has to offer. It’s perfect for a few spring days of rest with kids!.
Freedom of the ocean
For me, the ocean is the embodiment of freedom. The picturesque Bay of Biscay is a paradise for all fans of fish and seafood; in fact, it was in a restaurant by the ocean in Biarritz where I had one of the best seafood experiences in my life. The nearby Bordeaux is ideal for a one-day wine-tasting excursion, and the Basque Bilbao is famous for its gorgeous Guggenheim Museum. The fact that all these places are located by the ocean guarantees a breath of fresh sea air that will recharge your batteries.
Biarritz – a surfing paradise
Obviously the ocean is a paradise for surfers. This area is just perfect for surfing, for experienced surfboarders and greenhorns alike. Brace yourself for a really cool experience – the water temperature is rather low, especially in May, so make sure to (wet)suit up! Plus, it’s not like cold water has ever scared away any true surfer, right? 😉
La Concha Bay
The loveable San Sebastain – Basque Donostia – is just an hour’s drive away from Biarritza. The bay is shaped like a shell (hence the name – in Spanish “la concha” means “a shell”); its characteristic, semicircular beach and the surrounding small islands are a common theme in local postcards and fridge magnets. Its wonderful colors, from the lavish green of the local flora, to the turquoise water, to the yellow sand, create a perfect background for long strolls by the ocean.
The mysterious Basques
The Basque Country is an incredible place due to its unique, rich cultural and historical heritage. Once you visit you’ll understand why the Basques fight for autonomy – their distinctiveness from Spain is clearly visible everywhere you look. The local food, served in the form of pintxos (the equivalent of the Spanish tapas) is absolutely heavenly, and they cater for all foodies. Additionally, San Sebastian hosts numerous festivals, such as Tamborrada or international film festivals, which is a major attraction for all culture vultures
The Atlantic coast of France and Spain is not an obvious choice for the long May weekend, but their perfect ambiance and rich history will make an your trip exciting and unforgettable. Kids will surely appreciate the sandy beaches and blue water 😉 Go before word spreads to avoid crowds!
