Indian summer in the Salzburg Slate Alps

Long fall weekends at home? No way! Thanks to two public holidays, in November it is possible to go away even for over a week. Pity not to take advantage of it, especially given the beautiful fall season in Austria. Salzburg and the surrounding region are a feast for the senses with their wonderful colors and scents ❤️ What’s more, if you want to feel Christmassy already in November, Salzburg is truly the place to be 😉

Salzkammergut

Salzkammergut lies on the border of three Austrian states. As its name suggests, it used to be an important center for salt mining – the local salt mine remains a popular tourist destination for one-day trips from Salzburg.

Hallstatt

Hallstatt, a city established largely thanks to investments in architecture and art due to salt-mining, is the region’s pearl. It is fabulously located by a lake reflecting the surrounding mountains. It seems inaccessible – and indeed, it is mostly a car-free zone. In fall, Hallstatt looks absolutely amazing with its mysterious mists and the sun shining on the colorful flora. This charming, photogenic place attracts tourists from all around the world, especially from Asia. Fun fact: in China, there is a… replica of Hallstatt! Due to the city’s popularity, it’s best to plan your trip in order to avoid crowds. It’s a dream destination for children, with plenty of space to run freely and an amazing playground with a zip lane. Not to mention the spectacular views!

Gosausee – a lake overlooking Dachstein

During our visit to the region, we were staying at a small, cozy hotel in the nearby Gosau, which offers delicious food and an excellent playroom for children. The town is located in a rather vast valley, with a bus to Lake Gosausee – a perfect place for brisk fall walks in nature. Monumental mountains with glaciers, including the famous Dachstein, are absolutely stunning!

Salzburg

Salzburg is a beautiful city with a well preserved and maintained old town, with the characteristic clop of horse hooves. The waft from the local bakeries leads us straight to caraway rye bread. There is also a well-equipped Christmas shop (with a breathtaking display window!) open all year round – a treat for Christmas lovers. Fancy a schnitzel? There is a traditional restaurant nearby which specializes in such delicacies. High up the mountain there is a castle overlooking the city, which is a must-see attraction! Nowadays it houses a museum offering an insight into the history of the city and its region. There is no better place to admire Salzburg’s architecture and the Alps surrounding the city than the top of the castle ❤️

If you don’t have any plans yet for long November weekends, and you feel like checking out the Austrian version of the Indian summer, don’t hesitate and organize your trip HERE ❤️ It may be November, but you will find the Salzburg Slate Alps will welcoming with their warm atmosphere.
