Isla Holbox – a Mexican paradise?
Winter is coming… and for most of us the cold months mean longing for long, hot, sunny days. Mexico has it all! Isla Holbox, an Island right off the Yucatan Peninsula, is a holiday dream come true ❤️
Pearl of Yucatan
Holbox is a small, longitudinal island right off the Yucatan Peninsila’s coastline. Formally it is a part of the Quintana Roo province, separated from the mainland only by a lagoon. It is home to many bird species, which you can really see and hear. I should mention that the island is also adored by hordes of mosquitos… 😉 But what do we have insect repellents for, am I right? The beautiful fauna and flora will make up to you for any inconvenience!
Divine sea
Due to its unique location, the Gulf of Mexico has incredibly shallow waters, even relatively far off-shore. This makes it a perfect place for kids. The beautiful, azure water looks like picturesque Caribbean islands straight from a travel agent’s ad. Not to mention pristine, white, delicate sand… paradise found!
Relaxed atmosphere
I like unpretentious places where you can really unwind – and Holbox is one. Time passes more slowly there, the locals are friendly and helpful, although I have to admit that I find raking the beach a bit too much 😉 Customer service there really is top-notch; there are plenty of fun bars offering delicious meals and refreshments, and you can even get a massage at the beach if you want one. Really, what more can you ask for?
Cycling and nature
In order to get to Holbox, you need to take a ship from Chiquila (where you can leave your car). Holbox hardly has any traffic, with electric Melex as the most typical means of transport. I highly recommend renting a bike – you’ll have no problem with renting a baby seat and helmets, too – and spending one day sightseeing. It’s a wonderful experience, with beautiful views and relaxing nature.
If you go to Yucatan, Holbox is a great place to visit, if for a few days. Unwinding in an incredibly relaxed atmosphere, surrounded by beautiful nature, is a winter dreamland for all lovers of hot weather ❤️
