Santorini – my big fat Greek holiday!
I like Greece best in the spring, when it is sunny, bloomy, and refreshing, with clear water and air. Santorini is in no way overhyped, allowing you to feast your senses in many different ways.
From the sea
If you google Santorini, there are very few images of the island taken from the sea. It is incredible how different this view is from what you would expect. Approaching the shore we see a huge, black rock with a vague white shadow on the top – this is the famous alabaster architecture of Santorini! Arriving in Santorini by the sea is a truly unique experience.
A geologist’s paradise
As a geographer I am fascinated with volcanic islands and their geological history – often complex and explosive. Santorini is a part of a small archipelago, which bears the same name and is the remnant of a caldera; there are many traces of past seismic activity with characteristic, dark beaches.
How about a walk?
A steep road leads to the central, top part of the island, and it’s just… wow. On a sunny day with a clear sky, the view is nothing but spectacular 🧡 The glimmering sea and adjacent islands are breathtaking. Strolling through Santorini’s snow-white paths (which is really exciting with a stroller!), we are surrounded by the characteristic, postcard-like architecture with its houses, exclusive hotels, windmills and church bells. It’s pure magic!
I used to wonder whether Santorini is worth the hype – and I am absolutely sure it is. It is charming – in spite of its popularity – especially now, in the spring, when crowds and heat are not a pain in the neck yet!
