Plotting a course on the map – wooden jigsaw puzzles

We all know it: 2020 has been tough. However, let’s not complain about what we can’t do and focus on what is available instead. And there are plenty of things to do! Currently we’re spending more time at home, which means that we have to discover the world in a more stationary way 😉 Today I would like to share a few words on jigsaw puzzles. Perhaps it will be an interesting inspiration for Christmas gifts for the youngest – and I’m sure that adults will love them too! 😉

Local handicraft

I recommend buying from local companies as often as you can. Our jigsaw puzzles were made by an entrepreneurial mom of three from our hometown, Koszalin (check it). Supporting local handicraft is especially important nowadays – take a good look around, I’m sure there is a talented artist nearby. With a little openness and willingness, we can get a perfect, tailor-made product. Just what our children were dreaming about (well, and what parents will sure be keen on playing with too)!😉

Wood, colors, precision

So far I have bought a political map of three continents (Europe, Asia, and Africa). Moreover, I am planning to commission maps of South America and the USA. Next time, they will be in color. Meanwhile we will color the jigsaw puzzles with the countries we have already visited. So much fun! 😊 It should be no surprise that I love wood – both for its practical and visual properties. Our jigsaw puzzles are neatly made, with a special attention to the borders. A masterpiece! 😊

What should you pay attention to?

When we have an original idea, we can commission a personalized jigsaw puzzle to make sure it’s truly unique. Still, we should listen to the artist, as they will give us a lot of practical tips and tell us what is doable, will look better, and serve us well for a long time 😉 We should always pay attention to precision. In the case of wooden maps in the form of jigsaw puzzles, we should consider the fact that elements with smooth, slightly rounded, even a bit simplified (but sensibly so!) lines are easier to use. Moreover, jigsaw puzzles with such lines will serve us longer, especially if used regularly. Precision is also important in cutting – each element has to be neatly cut, so that it is easy to pick up and put in the right place. Also, there should be empty spaces which will make it easier to pick up an element with a finger. Additionally, the map should be up to date both in terms of the borders and the names of the countries. Aesthetics is crucial – beautiful lettering, as well as vivid, luscious colors are what I am after! 😊 Finally, pay attention to the box (or whatever the packaging is). The jigsaw puzzles are not magnetic, so they can easily lead to a mess. In order to avoid creating additional chaos (yeah, an understatement, I know 😉) in your child’s room, it’s a good idea to ask for some additional protection. My idea is to use some thick cloth and wrap it with an elastic band – go ahead and ask the artist for something like that 😊

Why is it a good idea?

Jigsaw puzzles engage different senses and offer excellent play-centered learning opportunities. Chatting over a jigsaw puzzle allows children of all ages to learn the names of continents and countries, as well as to find them on a map and cognitively arrange the global geography in their heads 😊 Such jigsaw puzzles teach about the world in an easy, fun way, encourage abstract thinking, as well as develop many other skills. And doing them is an excellent excuse for talking about travels – both those behind and ahead of us 😊
